Rezumat:   At the beginning of the 16th century the intellectual and spiritual wave that overtook Europe had targeted the renewal of the Church, and the acclimatization of the spirituality gained through the movement know as Reformation. Inspired by the same spirituality not only in Western Europe, but in Transylvania also the recently embraced movement had brought about changes in the field of education. It had declared mass education although it could not achieve it fully. The illustrious personalties, advocates and followers of this movement had hastened and patronized the spreading of education amongst the female population as well. Even if there are to be found data attesting that the issue of girl education was considered primary, in the 1617 century there is still no evidence of an institutionalized form of female education. On one hand the education of the women had no longer been the task of the minister but that of the chorister or schoolmaster, while in some communities female teachers were employed for this post. At the end of the 18th century and at the beginning of the 19th the function of the girl schools was not only an interest of the Church but the monarch also urged their establishment by means of enactment. In the Ratio Educationis expanded by Maria Theresa in the year 1777, one cannot yet find disposals regarding the education of women, however, the opportunities of such an education were granted. However, the aims of the 1646 synod had not been fully achieved even in the 18th century, it is sure that a process had started and developed and later achieved its final stage in establishing a primary girl school. This issue has reached a solution in the 19th century due to the law of education introduced in 1868, and due to establishment of the teacher training-collages.

Keywords: 1646 synod, institutionalised form of female education, National Reformed Schools, ecclesiastical visits.
