  Rezumat:  This paper is trying to present some reasons why the Romanian transition toward a free market economy is so slow and painful. A presentation of the situation before 1989 and of the transition that followed reveals the difficult environment where managers are acting. Attitudes that were developed during Communism like the fear of assuming individual responsibilities are completed now by a lack of knowledge in different areas of management, mainly for the older managers. This makes a large gap between the old managers and the young and inexperienced ones. For the companies to become dynamic and visible there is a great need for a new generation of managers, much better prepared for this profession.
