Rezumat: Chomsky’s ‘Methodological Preliminaries’ is an attempt to outline the requirements that have to be met by any grammar that aims to account for the speakers’ capacity to generate and understand an indefinitely large number of sentences they have never heard before. By pointing out the limitations of traditional and structuralist grammars, which give no account of linguistic universals, but only of particularities characteristic of individual languages, Chomsky tries to clarify the need for a generative grammar in the study of language. Generative grammar seems to be the only one possessing the necessary tools for solving the puzzle of language acquisition, by not only describing the intrinsic competence of the speaker, but by also providing an explicit analysis of his contribution. | |||||||
