Rezumat:  A Ticket to Ride? Railways and Tourism in the UK. The paper illustrates the relationship which exists between tourism and the means of transportation, railways in particular, and it is mostly based on realities encountered in the United Kingdom. Special attention has been given to such issues as the advantages of rail transport compared to other modes of transport, the evolution of railways, their impact on the development of tourism and the present state of affairs, after a continuous decline due to competition from both cars and planes. The effects on tourism generated by the building of the Channel Tunnel are analysed as a study case. Railways may represent a tourist attraction in themselves, and there are many scenic railways in the UK, mostly in the mountainous areas of the West and North, run by private companies. There are also many rail-related museums in the UK, two of them claiming a national relevance (in York and London). The paper was first presented at the Bognor Regis Department of Geography in June 1998.
