Rezumat:  Comparative Analysis between Elementary Landscape Units from Western Side of the Transylvanian Plain. The Elementary Landscape Units are defined, starting from Christian and Stewart`s idea of the Land Unit, as territorial entities, physiognomic homogeneous, used as a basis in landscape studies. These are delimited using the natural features (slopes and aspects) and the type of cover (natural or human) which will be digitised and then classified. The smallest areas with a single type of cover (for example deciduous forest) superposed by a category of natural feature (for example a 14-260 slope towards North and North East) are the Elementary Landscape Units. First, we digitized the contours from topographic maps (1:50000) and the polygons from land use maps (at the same scale) of each community chosen as case study: Unguraş, Ţaga, Suatu and Tritenii de Jos. Using the classification made by pedologists, we fixed the categories of slopes and aspects which were then classified. These categories are extremely important for the processes in landscape, because they influence the warmth in the soil, with strong results on vegetation, geomorphological processes and even on human activities. Then we combined slopes and aspects for obtain units of natural features characterized by the occurrence of a single category of slopes and of aspects. That classification was combined further with the land cover categories, using Arc View GIS software. Landscape types are related to other changes in society and answer to economic and social changes through man`s activities. Empirical observations indicate that the region is characterized by rural landscapes; that is true, but not helpful for comparisons at small scale. Computation of the areas of the Landscape Elementary Units allows establishing the main types of landscape at communities scale. We also focus on relationship between landscape fragmentation and the degree of rural development.
