Student Teachers’ Preconceptions About the Profession of Religion Teaching. Under the influence of the so-called cognitive shift in psychology, researchers emphasized that it is important to know what teachers think, what their beliefs are. The beliefs teachers hold with regard to learning and teaching determine their actions. Teachers themselves spent many years as students in school during which time they developed their own beliefs about teaching, many of which are totally opposed to those presented to them during their teacher education. In this study we emphasize that the implicit beliefs of student teachers should be made explicit. During teacher education those images, beliefs function as “filters” and according to them students select what they preserve from the content of the education. The study presents the conclusions of our investigations. To reveal implicit beliefs among the 1st and 2nd year students, we applied some methods, which promote reflection: ordered tree, concept map, creating metaphors and text analysis.

Keywords: student teachers’ beliefs, reflection, ordered tree, concept map, metaphor, text analysis.
