Rezumat: Church and State in Orient and in Occident. The Two Citadels and the Conflict between the Two Forces. This article studies the problem of the conflict between State and the Church, in connection with the relation civitas Dei - civitas terrena, as these two notions are presented in Saint Augustin’s De civitate Dei. The conflict between the two forces does not identify itself with the other conflict, of the two citadels as Augustin defines them (and this aspect has been demonstrated by many specialists lately). The conflict of the two powers is founded on the notion of imperio christiana, understood as an intermediary figure between civitas Dei and civitas terrena. From this point of view, the conflict between the State and the Church can be inferred, starting from Augustin’s and Eusebius of Caesarea’s texts, not only for the Latin Occident, but also for the Greek Orient, by taking into consideration, at the same time, the individual peculiarities of these two Christian traditions. Keywords: church, state, conflict, Augustin, Christian |
