Rezumat: The events ofthe revolution from 1848 deeply affected the situation of the RomanCatholic Church in Transylvania, especially through three legislative actsof the Parliament. The third law limited the right of the king to appoint theCatholic bishops. This provoked the protest of the Church, which feared theinvolvement of the liberal politicians in the nomination of the bishop. The13th law repealed the tithe. The liberal reformers and the Church reached anoticeable compromise. The Church gave up the earlier prerogatives andthe liberal reformers accepted to ensure the financing of the Church, assuming that the State would expropriate the possessions and incomes ofthe Church. The 20th act of law provided religious freedom and ensured theequality of the confessions; this implied the fact that the Catholic Churchceased to be a state religion. The law annulled the privileges of the CatholicChurch, but did not insure its autonomy, while the other churchessafeguarded their autonomy. The Church had to fight for decades manyother battles to obtain the right of self-government. | |||||||
