  Rezumat:  A Reorientation of the Sociological School of Cluj. Following his doctoral specialisation at the Sorbonne, Traian Rotariu asimilated the mathematical methods applied to sociological research. His 1977 thesis Education et mobilité. Recherches formelles sur la relation entre la mobilité sociale et le système d’enseignement, under the guidance of prof. Raymond Boudon proves our statement. Romanian version of the thesis Şcoala şi mobilitatea socială în ţările capitaliste dezvoltate from 1981 was a cornerstone for formal, mathematical research in sociology resulting in a re-orientation of the sociological school of Cluj from its encyclopedic tradition (of George Em. Marica, Eugeniu Sperantia, Ion Aluas, Achim Mihu) to the modern spirit of mathematical rigor.
