  Rezumat:   In a series of recent papers 1-5 we reported the synthesis of carboxybetaines by the addition reaction1 of tertiary amines with ,  - unsaturated carboxylic acids. Previously, some macromolecular carboxybetaine compounds have been obtained by one of the following reaction: alkylation of pendant tertiary amine group containing polymers with halogenated acetic acids or their esters, and polymerization of betaine group containing monomers. The former chemistry was applied using poly(4-vinylpyridine) and poly(styrene-co-vinylbenzyldimethylamine) 6 and the latter using vinylimidazole.7
