  Rezumat:  Since the beginning of the 20th century the term ‘literature’ has come to mean primarily fiction. The novel and the short story have attracted the greatest interest, establishing a kind of hegemony, at the expense of poetry, which enjoys a more limited audience nowadays, and drama, which is complicated by the fact that acting and stagecraft are as important as the script in creating the desired impact upon the audience. Fiction can define, contradict, mediate and even create new understandings of reality. It is both an instrument of social change, and a product of social – historical conditions. Technology is one of the social conditions that may strongly influence the evolution of literary genres and, therefore, it must be taken into consideration if we are to understand the development of the novel.
