Rezumat:  Volcanic and volcanoclastic rocks are mostly used close to their natural occurrences. Their degree of fracturing is often characterized by the presence of different generations of joints that facilitate splitting, but prevent the production of blocks for the stone industry. The colour is grey, black, green, yellow, reddish or brown. Some volcanics were highly appreciated: for example “Sparta Green” andesite (Greece) or the porphyritic rhyolite known as “Imperial Egyptian Porphyry” (Fiora and Alciati, 2006b). Some volcanics were used in particular for their specific properties. Examples are the Turkish andesite called “Lapis Sarcophagus”. Its high porosity ensured that corpses could decompose very quickly. Thus, this andesite was used to produce sarcophaguses all over the Mediterranean area.

Keywords: volcanic rocks, volcanoclastic rocks, international market, building and ornamental stones
