Rezumat: Sabratha was together with Lepcis and Oea one of three major cities in Tripolitania (Libya) during the 2nd century. The originally Phoenician town became a Roman city near the end of the first century B.C. The excavation at Sabratha, contrary to that at Lepcis, has revealed a large number of private houses from the 2nd century A.D. They are often narrow in layout, but holes for floor poles and remains of staircases show that many of them were at least two-storied. Mosaic floors were common, and the interior walls were often covered with decoration painted on plaster. Some of the paintings and mosaics are still in place, but the best have been removed to the museum. Keywords: wall paintings, plaster, microchemical analyses, archaeometry, Sabratha, Libya |
