Rezumat: The term “education” is difficult to define. Its meaning may reach from formal instruction of knowledge to developing a personal culture. In the field of education in particular for a general public, museums become more and more important players as was already foreseen by some specialists before the Second World War. Before the 80’s, research was the priority in most museums. This was reflected by a highly scientific language used by the guides, which was not adapted to the public. Presently, the activities carried out in museums regarding education, can be summarized in three points: (1) The scientific approach, which focuses on museum collections and their extensive explanation; (2) The topic-oriented approach, which is carried out by choosing specific themes for guided tours, based on the focus of the museum and/or on attractive exhibitions. Since guided tours address very often students of secondary schools, it should be emphasized here that museums cannot replace the school; (3) The social approach: a museum needs to attract also the adult public rarely visiting museums. The educational activities carried out in the Romanian museums are currently increasing. Many museums have departments which transform museums into cultural enterprises, where performance is measured by the number of visitors. This is only possible if museums increase their efficiency of communication with the public on all levels.
