Rezumat: A Geographical Study of Curtici Plain. The Curtici Plain covers an area of about 250 km2, being a part of the Arad Plain, in Western Romania, near the border with Hungary. It represents a well-inhabited space (more than 20,000 inhabitants) and has a number of specific geographical features. Among the physical geography features, one should point out the homogeneity of the relief (100-110m high), climate and vegetation, the absence of natural water streams, compensated by the presence of a large number of canals. The plain comprises 9 settlements, divided into 3 communes (Macea, Şofronea and Iratoşu) and one town (Curtici). They are polarised primarily by the nearby city of Arad, but Curtici is a secondary attraction pole. Agriculture is the main economic branch in the region, but the existence of thermal waters, the Macea Botanical Garden and the castles may determine a development of tourism in the area. However, the biggest achievement of the recent years is the Curtici Free Zone, where foreign investments are creating thousands of jobs for the inhabitants of the plain. Due to the Free Zone, the Curtici Plain will probably become a growth pole and is already an immigration area. Curtici is also the main railway entrance gate into Romania, thus being connected to the European railway network. Unfortunately, yet there is no border crossing point for car-holders, although it would be necessary. On the other hand, the roads connect the villages with the city of Arad, but the connections with Curtici are to be improved. | |||||||
