Rezumat:  A functional membrane-less microbial fuel (ML-MFC) was constructed and evaluated in terms of optimizing performance. By increasing the concentration of free ions of the electrolyte by 1.3g/l NaCl the internal resistance (Rin) of the cell decreased from 1.56 to 1.19 kΩ. By decreasing the distance between the anode and cathode the Rin decreased by 0,01kΩ/cm and the electrical power increased by 4 µW/cm. By introducing air sparging at the cathode the electrical power increased by 278%. The cell reached a maximum power density of 8.6 mW/m2. It has been observed that over time the power increases due to the fact that the microorganisms need a period of time to accommodate to the new ML-MFC’s environment. The ML-MFC works well with sodium acetate as a carbon source and has the capacity of consumption of 20 ml sodium acetate 1M over a period of 30 days.

Key words: renewable energy, microbial fuel cell, membrane-free
