Abstract: The Acathyste Hymn in the Iconography of Romanian Monasteries: “Woman, here is your Son; here is your Mother!” Through these words, Jesus entrusted Mary, in the person of John, the Church and the whole humanity and, in the same time, they received Mary as their Mother. Such as John, since the beginning the Church receives in its home the Mother of the Lord and offers Her continuously the bouquets of flowers of piety and of praise, as a sign of thanking for Her collaboration to the mystery of salvation. In this way, in the byzantine tradition and liturgy, the Acathyste hymn is a flower of this spiritual bouquet. The Church uses it to sing to Mary, the Servant of the Lord for Her active presence in the mystery of the Incarnation, prolonged in Hers. It’s a masterpiece of Mary’s theology and spirituality through which the Church sings the privileges of the Virgin and then makes them visible in iconographic representations. Because in the Eastern tradition they say that the iconographer is writing an icon, the present paper is supposed to read the message of the Acathyste written through forms and colours in the iconography of the Romanian monasteries. It represents a memory of the wonderful facts that God had done through Mary, in the benefit of the Church and of the Romanian people. In this way, the Acathyste confesses the Romanian’s faith and belief in the motherhood intervention of Mary in their favour, among their so difficult history. |
