Abstract:   People, Facts and Events that Lead to Overcoming the Deep Crisis of the Monastic Life of the Romanian Uniate Order of St. Basil the Great by the Beginning of the 20th Century. In the beginning of the last century, the monastic life of the Romanian Uniate Order of St. Basil the Great was on the verge of extinction. The wish of the Romanian Uniate bishops to revive this area of the life of the church, a wish manifested during the last quarter of the 19th Century, lead to no results at all. Yet the Uniate Order of St. Basil the Great from Galicia and later in Trans-Carpathia was experiencing a process of full reformation. Without the expressed claims to revive the Uniate Basilian monastic life in our country, even without promising to return to their country, a few Romanian youths felt attracted by the perspective of becoming Basilian monks. Lacking any other possibilities, they also understood this as a means of having the chance to study. The living desire to answer to this attraction led them to abandon their native places, even their country, face the entire challenges of living abroad and enter monasteries in the above mentioned territories. The extraordinary spiritual and intellectual value of these youths was felt in things they managed to accomplish in the foreign monasteries and especially after returning to their native country. They managed to restore the Uniate Basilian monastic life in Romania, elevating it socially and ecclesiastically to the highest value and quality level. Based on high value sources and a series of so far unexploited documents, this article approaches details that present this turning point in the life of the Romanian Uniate Basilians, presenting people, facts and events that kept alive the Basilian monastic life up to the present moment. We have studied details connected to the relevant personalities of the age: Fr. Atanasie Maxim, Fr. Leon Manu, Fr. Augustin and Lucian Pop, Fr. Gheorghe Marina and Gherasim Juca and Friar Vasile Alic.

Key words: Basilian monk, hieromonach, Uniate Basilian friars, reformation of monastic life, reformed friars, restoration of the monastic life, novitiate, perpetual vows, clergy ordination, abbot.
