Abstract:  Bernhard Welte, a Catholic priest and German philosopher of religion, has a specific concept of the holy. His concept defies theories which are emphasizing feelings or the irrationality in the experiences of the holy (Schleiermacher – Rudolf Otto – Max Scheler). He identifies the human intellect (Vernunft) as the organ of the holy. This study is meant to unfold the whole horizon of the question of the holy in the philosophy of religion by Welte.

Keywords: philosophy of religion, the holy, instrumental reason, Max Scheler, Rudolf Otto, Friedrich Schleiermacher, ontology, phenomenology of the holy, Verstand und Vernunft.
