  Abstract:

The Syndrome of Burnout in Christian Counseling. The syndrome of burnout was first described in 1974 and it refers to the response of the organism to stress and emotional strain. Research indicates that the possibility of the syndrome is significantly higher in the helping professions. The Christian ministerial organizations are known to be the most effective regarding their mission, but at the same time they tend to be favorable for the appearance of burn out. At the level of the Christian helper there can be some special factors identified as well, which are closely associated with the syndrome. In pastoral counseling and therapy the methods of treating burnout are various, because of the numerous results of researches that has been made during the years in this domain. However, despite these results, the problems caused by the syndrome on personal and organizational level, are just as acute as they where when Herbert Freudenberger identified it for the first time.

Keywords: burnout, helping professions, christian counseling, coping mechanisms, selfdiagnosis.
