Abstract:  Professionally it is universally accepted that texts like forewords and recommendations, surrounding large scientific works are extremely important for their correct interpretation. The main purpose of this study is to help understanding correctly the “Titkok titka” (Secret of Secrets) by analyzing its foreword. The author, Istvan Geleji Katona (1589–1649) was a theologian, writer, bishop and guardian of Reformed orthodoxy at the same time. His role in the history of literature and theology is interpreted in many ways by scholars. The title of his work follows the contemporary rules: it is very long and comprehensive; it establishes the purposes and methods of the author, the genre of his work. As the author suggests several times, it was written due to the theological disputes held in Klausenburg, in 1641. The foreword contains the name of the main patron who had a major role in financing the costs of appearance: György Rákóczy I., ruler of Transylvania, who’s cultural and theological policies are very important in the history of the country. The main attribute of the orthodoxy as a Reformed orientation is the polemic, offensive orientation, which can be observed in this case too. The circumstances of the theological disputes held in 1641, which stated the importance of the Holy Trinity, can be reconstructed due to the foreword of this work. Also, the foreword contains the short history of Unitarians and some information concerning seventh-day baptism. Istvan Geleji Katona’s main purpose is to protect religious beliefs and to promote them in those dangerous times.

Keywords: foreword, theological dispute in Klausenburg, heretic, Unitarism, Reformed orthodoxy.
