Abstract:  This study sets out to highlight the manner in which the psalms – prayers par excellence created to support the doxological cult promoted during the cultic reformation instated during the reign of King David – have influenced the entire liturgical life of the Jews from antiquity up to present times. To this end, after providing some preliminary notions that illustrate how the idea of prayer was conceived in the Judaic frame of thought, we will proceed to the analysis of the psalms’ trajectory from the courtyard of the Temple of Jerusalem, through the synagogues of the Diaspora, to the hearts of contemporary Jews. The description of this itinerary was designed in such a way as to capture the essential role played by the psalms in the Jewish cult and private prayer and it will be explained and substantiated by the means of Talmudic texts and the writings of a series of mediaeval rabbis .
