  Article:   THE 5TH ECUMENICAL SYNOD AND THE ORIGENISM.

  Abstract:  The 5th Ecumenical Synod and the Origenism. Between the 5th of May and the 2nd of June, 553, the 5th Ecumenical Synod took place in the capital of the Byzantine Empire. Although the original purpose of the synod was the matter of the Three chapters, the conclusions touched several other theological points. The conclusions of the decisions were formulated briefly in 15 statements under the form of anathematisms. In the 11th anathematism, together with the heretics condemned in the first four synods, Origen’s name is mentioned. The presence of his name here contributed to the setting of three hypotheses concerning Origen’s condemnation during the 5th Ecumenical Synod: 1. The 5th Ecumenical Synod gathered to analyze the situation concerning origenism and condemned it together with Origen himself during some sessions for which the documents were lost. 2. The 5th Ecumenical Synod gathered to analyze the matter of the Three Chapters and not that of Origenism. The bishops taking part in the 5th Ecumenical Synod studied the case of Origen during some preliminary sessions, before the official opening of the synod. 3. The 5th Ecumenical Synod was not concerned with the Origenism, and its name within the mentioned anathematism was just an interpolation.
