Abstract:  Matters of Human Rights in Bartholome de las Casas’s Work. The research presents the theological and philosophical thought of the Dominican monk Bartholome de las Casas in the context of America’s colonisation by the Spaniards. Among many instances of injustice and abuse committed by colonisers, Bartholome de las Casas defends their rights and liberties, proving a deep Christian and humane spirit that impresses us even nowadays. Las Casas can be considered the pioneer of human rights and, in the meantime, it advances a model of evangelization and Christianisation of natives in the spirit of the Gospel, not of politics based on social or racial discrimination.

Keywords: human rights, natural rights, freedom, right to life, religious freedom, right to property.
