The female orderof Franciscans from Mallersdorf, founded by Joseph Nardini (1821–1862),was established in Transylvania in 1860. Their regional centre was in Sibiu, then in Petroşani. They worked in sixteen places in schools and hospitals, and founded a pedagogical high-school, which was the only catholic onebetween the two World Wars. They proceeded highlighted and blessedwork in the Universities Clinic from Cluj. After 1948 by the new laws, theircloisters, schools and hospitals were closed. Only some of the hospitalsisters– by the intervention of religious doctors and the permissiveauthorities – were permitted to continue their work in civil clothes, butmost of them spread around and tried to spend their life with occasionalwork. Their spiritual influence did not end then. Since 1990 they are livingagain in community, leading charity institutes in Romania.
