Abstract:  The aim of the present paper is to revisit the major criticisms of the International Monetary Fund and to subsequently discuss some major reform proposals. Although the political and economic sides of the IMF are inter-related, the present paper focuses on the political aspect of the subject, as on the one hand, the economic dimension would require more than an essay could offer, and on the other hand, it would lead toward disciplines which are not yet enough familiar to the author. The paper is structured in six parts, starting with a brief review of the origins, initial aims and the evolution of the Fund over time. The following part discusses several major criticisms of the IMF. The fourth part looks at the proposals for incremental reform. Part 5 analyses some of the proposals for radical reform. The final conclusions are drawn in part 6.
