Abstract: Bacteriorhodopsin (BR) discovered in Halobacterium salinarium is a light-driven proton pump. The light-sensitive chromophore in the protein is a retinal bound to a lysine via a protonated Schiff base. This study aims to describe the charge motion after the all-trans retinal is bound to the protein. For this purpose we compared the spectroscopic and electric signals of the reconstructed retinal deficient membrane suspension, reconstructed bleached membranes and the wild-type BR purple membranes. | |||||||
