Abstract: Isidor Neugass’s Painting Activity in Brașov (1845-1847). Born around 1780 in Berlin, Isidor Neugass was a traveling artist who first worked in Vienna and Pest (1806-1811) and later travelled throughout the whole Europe, from Italy to Russia. Isidor Neugass arrived in Brașov in July 1845 and remained here until the end of 1847. Isidor Neugass’s work created during his stay in Brașov comprises several icons and portraits. Among these works, only the following have been preserved: Portrait of Hrisant Penetis, abbot of Horezu Monastery (kept at Horezu Monastery, Gorj County), Boyar’s portrait (The National Museum of Art of Romania), two pair portraits from Székely National Museum Sfântu Gheorghe - Portrait of a Man and Portrait of a Woman. The official portraits painted by Isidor Neugass feature characteristics of academic style and integrate Biedermeier elements. Keywords: portrait, academic art, Biedermeier, Brașov |
