  Abstract:  Interpreting the Geographic space in Hölderlin`s poetry. An Excursion. Scaling Hölderlin`s writings to a mere geographical coordinate would be quite an adventurous attempt. However, the diversity of geographical units, ranging form sky to earth, from mountains to plains and rivers and cities, points to his aesthetic conception that is based on the conciliation of antagonisms. For him, the occidental “Junonian sobriety” and the oriental “sacred pathos” furnish the ideal balance for the creative power. With a view on this, the Mediterranean space seems to appear as a melting pot of nature and art, of transgression and persistence, of the Dionysiac and the Apollinic. It is rather difficult to speak of a certain geocultural unity of the Mediterranean, given the religious gap - the incompatibility of Islam and Christianity; however, it is Hölderlin’s mission to reconcile not the two religions, but Man and God. An important geographical unit is the volcano, the most representative of which is the Aetna. It is a fact that the inhabitants of the region perceived the Aetna to be a friendly entity, despite the ravaging emissions of lava. Unlike other volcanic regions, this particular area was characterized by a constant increase in population, which gives ground to Hölderlin`s conception of the palyngenetic relevance of the volcano. The Aetna, alongside with the Alps attain a political component, being associated with the French Revolution in “Hyperion or the hermit in Greece”, or in the letter to the sister, as of February 23rd 1801. The mountains are the guardians of the Peace of Lunéville, but also an interstitial communication space for man and God. The Garonne-Gironde-Dordogne basin is another region that leaves its imprint on Hölderlin`s poetry, on account of the peculiar flow direction of the Garonne. Rivers embody rejuvenation, the dynamic principle of nature, therefore of Man.
