Abstract:  Renewal, Technology Update and Restructuring. Solutions for Improving the Romanian Energy System. Case Study - Işalniţa Power Station. Coal provides 50% of the global sources of energy and it is hoped to stay the same until 2020. In the last couple of decades, Romania has witnessed a continuous decrease in energy consumption and brown coal extraction. Fortunately, only 35 Romanian power stations are still in use mainly because of the soil- and air pollution resulted from the process of coal-burning. Industrial restructuring and the decrease in energy production has significantly helped create a better environment but the previous decades of strong unsustainable industrialization, will continue to show effects in the future. A series of measures will have to be taken in order to prevent the contamination and destruction of the former mining areas: establish in detail all the damages caused by mining, create a project of environmental reconversion, set up all the methods to be used, estimate the costs and eventually, start prioritizing in order to achieve a functional reconverted area.
