Abstract:  The Normative-Formal Regionalization and the Territorial Planning at Regional Level in Romania. The main aim of this paper is to present an overview about the normative-formal regionalization of space and about the interconnections between the main product of this mode of regionalization, the administrative-territorial units, and the regional planning, according to the special situation of Romania. One of the main conclusions of the study is that from the three main modes of regionalzations (normative-formal, symbolic-informal and positive-scientific) the normative-formal one has the greatest influence on the regional development. It is based on some spatial characteristics (structure, processes, institutions, relations) and it is setting the frame for the formal system of regional planning and development. Our empirical analysis in Romania is in accordance to Ansti Paasi-s formulations (1986): the effects of this mode of regionalization are expressed by the territorial, symbolic, institutional and entity shape of the regions, in our case of the development regions established in 1998.
