Abstract:  Art Criticism and Critics in the Inter-War Press. The study focuses on the most important inter-war art publications and also on the critics'' contributions, examining the main themes and trends in the discourse. In that period the state of the art critic, unlike the literary one, was not as well shaped, although highly representative personalities such as Tudor Arghezi, Francisc Şirato, O.W. Cisek, Aurel D. Broşteanu, Al. Busuioceanu, George Oprescu, N.N. Tonitza, Jacques Lassaigne made themselves heard in the field as well. The most involved art critics were the writers, the art collectors and the artists. It was only in the 1930s that expertise art critics, coming from the academic artistic environment, appeared. One of the favourite themes of the critique refers to the so-called national specific character of the art, also to synchronizing Romanian art with the European one, through influence and assimilation of such trends as: Impressionism, Expressionism, Fauvism, Cubism etc. A special case was the trend called "New Classicism" in the 1930s, an alternative to the European artistic phenomenon in the same period.
