Article:   NEW EDUCATIONAL PRACTICES IN VISUAL ARTS AND LIBERAL STUDIES.

Authors:  DORU POP.

  Abstract:

The author describes how new teaching methods and knowledge practices, that come from the critical pedagogies of the Left and the Liberal arts formation, can be put into practice. Critical to the traditional teaching methods, considered to be inappropriate within the field of visual arts learning and liberal studies classes, the paper advocates the need to implement these new methods and practices. Considering the inadequacy of the Romanian pedagogical practices with the pressure created by the changes in the academic structure, the author shows that emerging fields of study and new courses introduced in the curriculum require radical changes in the general framework of the classroom. Didactic strategies that worked for traditional settings are no longer valid in these new situations, more so when there are practical fields of study, like vocational training, arts that are oriented towards praxis and not so much dependent on theoretical knowledge. The change in academic interest requires the transformation of the learning habits, activities and processes. This endeavor is illustrated by the example of three years of study at the Faculty of Theater and Television at Babeş-Bolyai University, where the author has applied some of the contemporary critical pedagogies, liberal didactic practices and innovative educational contexts. The article presents the difficulties, the challenges and the results of an academic case for new pedagogies and learning methods.
