Abstract:   Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a tool which can be used to evaluate the environmental performance of municipal solid waste (MSW) management systems. The aims of the study were to identify the environmental “friendly” system in applying this methodology at Cluj County level. In this study, two different municipal solid waste (MSW) management scenarios were developed and compared for the Cluj County. Scenario 1 represents the current MSW management status in Cluj County, involving comingled collection, transport and landfilling, while scenario 2 was incorporated a mechanical-biological treatment unit for the wet part of the MSW before landfilling. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology was applied in order to determine the most environmentally friendly system scenario. The Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) analysis was carried out with the aid of GaBi4 software for universities. Impact categories dealt with were: Global Warming Potential (GWP), Acidification Potential (AP), Eutrophication Potential (EP), Human Toxicity Potential (HTP) and Photochemical Ozone Creation Potential (POCP).The lowest contribution to the global warming category was calculated for the Scenario 2.

Key words: LCA, Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), Global warming potential, waste.
