  Article:   DEVELOPING CRITICAL THINKING USING SPECIFIC REGIONAL GEOGRAPHY MAPS.

  Abstract:  Developing Critical Thinking Using Specific Regional Geography Maps. We present the way in which the activity may be organised, in small groups of students, within the seminar of the Didactics of Geography, in order to analyse and interpret maps: The Japanese megalopolis and Energy resources of the Russian Federation. In order to develop the students’ critical thinking, it is necessary to ask questions that trigger: formulating hypotheses referring to the causes of some social and economic phenomena; explaining the conditions that determined certain trends in organising the urban or agricultural space and in the development of specific industrial branches; formulating several prognoses or identifying trends in the evolution of the phenomena. The students learn by co-operating, by using their previous knowledge and the pieces of information obtained while analysing the maps, as well as the ones gathered from the discussions in the larger group. They start from the professor’s questions in reasoning and in exercising the operations of thinking. The evaluation is realised by analysing the questions the students ask and the answers that they give. This way of analysing and interpreting maps may be applied also within other seminars where maps are used and in the didactic activity with pupils in the pre-university education system. The competences that the students acquire are situated at a high level because they appear as a result of the students’ own intellectual effort, in an optimal framework of teaching and learning, while answering to their needs and purpose. The “rules” of this type of activity may also be transferred into other fields.
