Abstract:   A totally objective look at history is neither possible nor desirable. Seeking the past we always strive to understand the present. In the Jewish understanding of history the sovereign God is actively involved with the creation. Everything in the universe is under God’s control—from the quantum to the cosmic. The chosen people can either obey or disobey God, but cannot ignore his presence and has to accept the consequences of their decision. The Jewish Sacred Scriptures albeit contain historical elements, in its primary intent doesn’t just records the events of the history, rather theologically interprets the past in order to understand the present and to foresee the future. Thus, the Jewish history is a mixture of historical events and religious experiences related to those events. Therefore the wonders and miracles of the Jewish history are not to be interpreted primarily as historical events but as narratives with underlying theological messages. They are not history remembered, but rather „history metaphorized.”Consequently the primary purpose of the miracles and wonders of the Jewish Sacred Scriptures are not to generate awe or astonishment, but to profess the greatness of God, whose power and glory cannot be adequately described in human words or historical narratives. If we remove these stories from their „faith matrix” we risk making them not only unintelligible but irrelevant also.To understand the miracle stories of the Jewish Sacred Scriptures we don’t need the help or science or philosophy. If we could only manage to listen to these very fragile sacred stories without our prejudices and misconceptions they would reveal what always was and will remain indescribable: the Glory of God.
