  Article:   THE FIRST VERSES OF MARK’S GOSPEL / MÁRK EVANGÉLIUMÁNAK KEZDŐ VERSEI.

  Abstract:  The First Verses of Mark’s Gospel. Mark’s Gospel was regarded for eighteen centuries as the last among the good news and an abbreviation of Matthew’s Gospel. This view has changed radically in the beginning of the nineteenth century stating that it is actually the first Gospel, and then research on Mark started vigorously. The superscript of the Gospel may be a later addition. The genre of the gospel was started by Mark. His writing resembles an ancient biography. Mark presents to his audience Jesus, of whom he will relate in his book. The Iēsou Kristou genitive case is objective and therefore the translation is: “the good news about Jesus Christ”. God has sent his messenger, John, before Jesus, to prepare his way. Mark quotes Ex 23,20 and Isa 40,3 from the LXX. Mark presents us with a dual shift in the beginning of his Gospel. On the one hand there is introspection from above on the daily activities; this is the vertical shift (↓). On the other hand we are in the desert, and then Mark takes us from there to the inhabited area, and this would mean a horizontal shift (→). Uniting these two directions will show us the cross which is partly the goal of this story and biography.
