Abstract:   Johannes Sturm was a renowned humanist teacher, an enthusiastic Calvinist, who founded and used a teaching system based on Melanchthon’s views, and was acknowledged in the 16th and 17th centuries. The main point of Sturm’s conception lies in the process of going from perception to concept; examining the object, describing it with words and through the word again reaching deeper knowledge of the object. In his view the teaching process has three objectives: graciousness, knowledge and verbal communication skills. He relied on Latin rather than German language in teaching. As the author of several valuable school books he was recognised by emperors, kings, who asked for his advice in school matters. The importance of Sturm pedagogy is a systematic teaching conception devised on his own ideas and adapted to the needs of humanist education in his time. The greatest emphasis was placed by Sturm on the suitable method to attain progress with children of all abilities. It was a well-organised system, based on the principle of progressivity and consistency suitable to each age level from lower to upper classes. His ideas were first used with great success in his school in Strassburg.Despite his merits, his shortcoming was a certain limited character and one-sidedness, as similar to many other humanists of the time, he thought that the aquisition of classical languages is the most important aspect of education. The great merit of Sturm is that he did not only manage to see the mistakes of teaching in his time but he also made effort to eliminate them, combining teaching with education through beautiful style and refined taste.
