Abstract:  The Chronicle of a Sinister September. Bishop Vasile Aftenie’s State Security Personal File. The Communism, often referred to as abnormality or alienation, in Romania, or even elsewhere, provided the suitable context for crimes to take place. Witty, the Romanian philosopher Petre Țuţea said: “One, to understand that the Communism is incapable to govern, does not need a doctorate in Social Sciences. Any ox would see that it is not good”. And of no good it was… The Greek-Catholic Church, through her bishops, priests, and all believers, had to suffer much. The present article is a synthesis of Bishop Vasile Aftenie’s personal file that can be found in the Archives of the State Security. It describes almost an entire month that he spent, in the autumn of 1948, by visiting parishes of several counties in the heart of our country. He has been followed by the authorities and many reports have been written about him and the speeches he delivered. They were supposed to incriminate him for having acted against the so called “democratic” regime in Bucharest. Imprisoned and abused, Vasile Aftenie died on the 10 of May 1950.
