Abstract:  For a Culture of the Word: Pope Benedict’s Conference to Representatives of Culture in Paris (September 12, 2008). From 12 to 15 September 2008, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lourdes (1858), Pope Benedict XVI paid his first apostolic visit to France. In his address to representatives of the world of culture (writers, artists, journalists, scholars…) in Paris, he pointed out that the early Christian monks developed a culture of the word because they searched for God in the written Word of the Scriptures. Furthermore, this culture was shared in fellowship and included communicating with God in praise, prayer and music. However, the Word of God cannot be understood in texts alone, which can lead to fundamentalism, but is revealed in the word and history of human beings. Finally, the culture of the word requires its proclamation since Christians believe in a God who is God for all humanity. The Pope declared that any genuine culture must be founded on a search for God and a readiness to listen to him.
