Il discorso circa il diavolo (dal greco διάβολος, dal tema διαβολ/διαβαλ di διαβάλλω) risulta più che mai complicato, soprattutto al tempo di oggi, dato che pare vi sia un vero e proprio svuotamento non solo di tale realtà ma anche – forse ancor prima – di ciò che la parola diavolo indichi. Nella Scrittura la parola, dall’ebraico דָּבָר (dāḇār), ha una importanza notevole. Da un lato essa esprime il contenuto che sta in fondo alla parola stessa, per cui non è possibile separare la parola dal suo contenuto; dall’altro lato esprime una realtà che è disponibile soltanto nella parola.
