Abstract:   Commonweal is not only the principle of the Catholic social teaching but it has deeply pervaded the occidental mentality and as a consequence it has become an important element of the contemporary politics and philosophical discourse, too. However, it is known from experience that in spite of its frequent use the content of the concept is not obvious. The task of this study would be to describe this difference looking for a response if commonweal is an ideological utopia that cannot be reached or it is the part of a social-political process that is being built continuously.

Keywords: commonweal, the Catholic social teaching, political philosophy
