  Abstract:  Die bedeutendste Neuerung, die das Mittelalter in der Messfeier hervorgebracht hat, ist die Elevation im Zentrum der Messe. Die Elevation der Hostie verbreitete sich seit dem 12. Jahrhundert von Frankreich aus, die Erhebung des Kelches dagegen setzte sich nur langsam durch. Die Elevationsfrömmigkeit ist ein Brennpunk der spatmittelalterlichen Eucharistiefrömmigkeit. Der Anblick der emporgehobenen eucharistischen Gestalten galt als „heilig und heilbringend“. Im Folgenden wird dieser neue Ritus im Zentrum der Eucharistie in seiner geschichtlichen Entwicklung näher untersucht und seine theologischen Hintergründe präsentiert.
