  Article:   THEORETICAL ACCOUNTS OF SENTENCE PROCESSING.

  Abstract:  Psycholinguistic investigations into such matters as sentence processing and discourse processing aimed to first identify whether during these processes the focus is on the deep or on the surface structure of sentences. Therefore, in order to formulate sound principles of sentence processing, psycholinguists studied the ways in which people process various instances of syntactic ambiguity and, especially, temporary ambiguity. Psycholinguistic theoretical accounts of sentence processing have been, until recently, dominated by two separate trends: the structure-based models and the constraint-based models. These have lately come under scrutiny and new models have been devised in an attempt to more accurately describe the sentence comprehension techniques employed by language users.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG. Die psycholinguistischen Nachforschungen in was die Satz- und Diskursverarbeitung betrifft, zielten darauf zu identifizieren ob bei diesen Prozessen der Schwerpunkt auf der tiefen oder oberflächigen Struktur liegt. Deswegen, um solide Grundsätze für die Satzverarbeitung formulieren zu können, analysierten die Psycholinguisten die verschiedenen Weisen in denen die Menschen unterschiedliche Situationen von syntaktischer und insbesondere von vorübergehender Ambiguität behandeln. Die theoretischen psycholinguistischen Berichte über Satzverarbeitung waren bis neulich von zwei unterschiedlichen Richtungen dominiert: die strukturbasierte Modelle und die einschränkungbasierte Modelle. Diese sind in der letzten Zeit auf den Prüfstand geraten, während neue Modelle entwickelt worden sind, um die von Sprachenanwender benützten Satzverständnistechniken besser beschreiben zu können.
