Abstract:  This paper provides an overview of the techniques available to authors of interactive learning material for use in flexible learning across the Internet. The rapid expansion in use of the Internet by educational institutions due to the emergence of the hypertext-based World Wide Web is first briefly reviewed, and then the variety of options available to authors of learning material are described in more detail. These techniques range from the basic use of simple hypertext structuring mechanisms available in the standard language of World Wide Web documents (HTML - Hypertext Markup Language) through to richer interactions and visualisations made possible by languages such as Java and VRML (Virtual Reality Modelling Language). The techniques are compared and contrasted on the basis of their technical and pedagogical characteristics.
