Abstract:  This article tries to make a typology of many different historical forms of nationalism. The main idea is that nationalism is not an independent ideology but always a part of a larger ideological combination. Traditionally nationalism was on the right, but it also entered in a strange confluence with the left, even with communist ideology. There is a strong similarity between nationalism and communist ideology: both are committed to organic community, collective rights against individual, civic rights; they both put the origin of the morality in the collective not in the individual consciousness. Other main thesis is that there are peculiar features of nationalism in South Eastern Europe, because here there is no tradition of civic patriotism like in the most of Western countries, but an ethnic approach of the nation-state. One of the most important parts of the article is about the relationship between democratization, post-communist transition and state building. The issue of state building cannot be decided democratically; one can make democracy work only after this obstacle is solved.
