Abstract:  The fall of the totalitarian regimes in the Eastern and Central European countries was followed by the appearance of an impressive number of political parties. There are two major ideological orientations that could be distinguished though: a liberal orientation which promotes the model of western democracies and a more egalitarian orientation. This study aims at describing the way in which the central ideas of this two ideological lines (liberty and equality) are reconstructed in the Romanian society and the degree to which these reconstructions are related to the electoral preferences.
