Abstract:  The content of 18O in water from wine is determined by IRMS and is used for the detection of addition of water, for the characterisation of the geographical origin of wines and for the authentication of the year of vintage. The European Community has adopted the determination of 18O from wine as an official method for the analysis of wines and has included this parameter in the E.U.Wine Databank. This paper presents some results concerning the use of 18O/16O isotopic ratio of the water of wine to identify the geographical origin of wines.
