Abstract:  This is the story of a serendipitous discovery, which was made when preparing inclusion compounds of 4-methylpyridine (4MP: C6NH7) in α-cyclodextrine (αCD, the association of 6 glucose units: C6O5H10)6). At room temperature, solutions containing up to 300 g/l of 4MP in αCD are homogeneous and transparent. When heated to between 50° and 80°C, these solutions, which also contain the crystallization water of αCD, solidify. After cooling the solution to room temperature, the solid melts and the original solution is recovered. The figure below illustrates the phenomenon for a solution of 200g/l of 4MP in αCD.
