Article:   RARE EARTH-TRANSITION METAL COMPOUNDS: MAGNETISM AND APPLICATIONS.

Authors:  E. BURZO.

Abstract:  The rare-earth or yttrium (R) – transition metal (M) compounds form closely packed structures which may be regarded as arrangement of spheres having different dimensions. The necessity of maximum packing, taking into account geometrical and energetic restrictions, leads to an ordered arrangement, with well defined stoichiometry, in which the atoms are distributed on specific crystallographic sites. For example in Sm-Co series, Sm3Co, Sm9Co4, SmCo2, SmCo3, Sm2Co7, SmCo5 and Sm2Co17 compounds, were reported. In the corresponding iron system only SmFe2, SmFe3 and Sm2Fe17 were shown [1]. Ternary compounds, as example R2Fe14B or Rn+1Co3n+5B2n, are also of interest. Substitutions at the rare-earth and transition metal sites are possible, in a certain amounts.
